CAMBRIDGE -- Junior Mike Guigli (North Stonington, CT) scored with just 1:55 left in regulation to help the Tufts Men's Soccer team earn a 1-1 tie at MIT on Wednesday afternoon. The host Engineers are the seventh ranked team in the country.
For the second year in a row,
MIT and Tufts battled to a 1-1 double-overtime
tie. The Engineers’ and the Jumbos’
records now stand at 1-0-1 on the season.
Tech controlled possession of
the ball for most of the first half, eventually getting on the scoreboard in the
31st minute. A yellow card issued to Tufts resulted in a free kick
taken by Dan Griffith. His 40-yard pass was headed in by Robert Pilawa for the
goal.
In the second half, MIT
continued to dominate on the offensive end, out-shooting the Jumbos, 8-2.
However, Tufts mounted an attack of its own and tied the game on a goal by Guigli. Both squads had several opportunities
to win the game in overtime, but outstanding defensive play maintained the
deadlock.
In the goal for MIT, Morgan Mills collected three saves. For the Jumbos, Matt Sullivan (Medfield, MA) had three saves in the first half while Scott Conroy (Madison, CT) finished the game with nine saves.
