MEDFORD -- Seniors Greg O'Connell (Cohasset, MA/Belmont Hill
School) and Alex Bedig (Lafayette, CA/Head-Royce School)
were voted on to the 2007 All-New England Small College Athletic
Conference (NESCAC) teams by the league's head coaches. O'Connell is
on the first team at midfield and Bedig is on the second team
defense as the announcement was made on Thursday.
This is the third All-NESCAC honor for O'Connell, but the first
time he is on the first team. He was named to the second team as
sophomore in 2005 and again as a junior in 2006. He led Tufts in
scoring this fall with five goals and one assist for 11 points.
O'Connell opened the season strong, scoring twice in a 2-2 tie at
Colby on September 8. He also scored the lone goal in a great Tufts
effort at Williams, though the result was a 2-1 loss. The five goals
tie O'Connell for seventh place in NESCAC. He was among the league
leaders in scoring from the midfield position.
Tufts was solid defensively in 2007, and Bedig was at the core of
that performance. The Jumbos allowed 17 goals in 14 games, and that
1.21 goals allowed per game average is tied for fourth in NESCAC.
Their five shutouts, including against Bates and Trinity, are also
tied for fourth in the league. Bedig is the first Jumbo defender to
be honored by NESCAC since Mike Prindiville for the 2001 season.
The Jumbos finished the 2007 season with a 5-8-1 record overall.
Their 2-6-1 record for five points in conference matches tied for
seventh place.
