MACGREGOR NAMED TO VERIZON ACADEMIC ALL-REGION TEAM

MEDFORD-- Tufts University senior forward Matt MacGregor (Little Compton, RI/ Middletown) was named to the 2002-2003 Verizon Academic All-District 1 College Men's Soccer Team.  Honored for his ability and leadership on the field and his commitment in the classroom, MacGregor portrays the essence of the student-athlete at Tufts.

As a two-year tri-captain and a leading player in the front and middle, MacGregor helped lead the Jumbos to a record of 9-5-1 overall and 4-4-1 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC).  He ended his senior season with five goals and five assists for and 15 points, second on the team. Head Coach Ralph Ferrigno's team lost in the first round of the conference tournament at Amherst, 2-1. MacGregor will graduate in May as the #10 all-time leader in scoring at Tufts with 60 points on 21 goals and 18 assists in 57 games.

MacGregor helped Tufts win its first four games this season.  He scored a goal in the second game of the season against Amherst for a key 3-1 NESCAC win.  In the following game against MIT, he scored again in addition to an assist.  Later on in the season, the Jumbos defeated Swarthmore 4-0 with two goals scored by MacGregor.

Last year, he was named to the All-New England Fourth Team as well as to the All-NESCAC Second Team after scoring six goals with four assists for 16 points in 16 games. As a sophomore in 2000, MacGregor was the team's leading scorer with seven goals, nine assists, and 23 points in 18 games.  The Jumbos won the ECAC New England Championship that year.

MacGregor is a double major in International Relations and History.  Maintaining a grade point average of better than 3.8, he has made the Dean's List every semester. He is also a Staff Writer for the Tufts Daily.

MacGregor attended Middletown High School and was a member of the Bayside United Club Team before attending Tufts.  During his time here the Jumbos went 41-19-5 as MacGregor started 52 out of 57 games he played. Tufts made two ECAC post-season appearances and earned two NESCAC tournament berths during his four years.

This marks the second straight year a member of the Tufts men's soccer team was honored. Mike Prindiville, a 2002 graduate, was named to the All-Region and All-America Verizon Academic teams last year.
