MacGREGOR NAMED NESCAC SOCCER PLAYER OF THE WEEK

MEDFORD- Tufts University junior tri-captain Matt MacGregor (Little Compton, RI/Middletown) was named New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Player of the Week for the week ending October 14.

Tufts' leading scorer last year, MacGregor once again proved why he was named a tri-captain before the 2001 season. In a crucial NESCAC contest against Wesleyan, he scored two goals to lead the Jumbos to a 2-1 overtime victory. MacGregor opened the game's scoring with a shot to the right of the Wesleyan net that rolled just inside the far post at the 24th minute. After a Cardinal-dominated second half in which Wesleyan evened up the score, the game went into overtime. Seven minutes into the extra session, MacGregor again scored from the right side of the field, taking a pass from classmate Garrett Dale (Upper Montclair, NH/Montclair) and knocking it past the scrambling Wesleyan goalkeeper to clinch the victory for the Jumbos.

Ten games into the season, MacGregor is again one of the team's leading scorers. Along with Dale, he leads the team with five goals, and is second on the squad with 11 points. He is currently seventh in the NESCAC in scoring.

Head Coach Ralph Ferrigno's team has been hot as of late. The Jumbos have won four straight and seven of eight as they've improved to 8-2 overall and 5-2 in the NESCAC. The team was ranked fifth in last week's New England poll and is currently tied for second in the conference as they head into the 2001 season's final four contests.

MacGregor and the rest of the Jumbos will host the Wildcats of Johnson & Wales University in non-conference action this Wednesday (Oct. 17) at 2:30 pm. Tufts will then travel to Williamstown, Mass., this Saturday (Oct. 20) to face the nationally-ranked Williams College Ephmen (11-0, 7-0 NESCAC) in a NESCAC battle. Game time is 1:00 pm.
