THREE JUMBOS NAMED TO ALL-NEW ENGLAND MEN'S SOCCER TEAMS

MEDFORD – Senior back Mike Prindiville's (Manchester, CT/Loomis Chaffee) selection to the First Team was the Tufts University highlight of today's release of the 2001 National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-New England Area Teams for Division III. Twenty-three institutions in total are represented on the four teams with coaches from 49 New England colleges in Division III taking part in the voting process.

Prindiville was one of three backs selected to the First Team. Junior forward Garrett Dale (Upper Montclair, NJ/Montclair) was named to the Third Team, and junior forward Matt MacGregor (Little Compton, RI/Middletown) was selected to the Fourth Team.

The field general for the 11-4-1 Jumbos, tri-captain Prindiville was the heart of the team. In back he was the center of a defense that surrendered just a 1.11 goals against average in 1,545 minutes of play. He also added to the offense this season after entering the year without a goal. He scored three game-winners against NESCAC opponents Colby, Bowdoin and Trinity. He was also named to the All-New England Small College Athletic Conference First Team.

Dale led Tufts in scoring and was fifth in the NESCAC with eight goals and eight assists for 24 points. His overtime goal in the 110th minute at Amherst gave Tufts a 1-0 win over the previously unbeaten Lord Jeffs. He also netted game-winners against Gordon and MIT as the Jumbos were 4-0 against non-conference opponents. He was also an All-NESCAC Second Team pick.

Like Dale, MacGregor started all 16 games for the Jumbos. He netted six goals with four assists for 16 points to finish seventh in the conference. He scored two goals, including the game-winner in overtime, in a key 2-1 victory over Wesleyan. The tri-captain also scored a key insurance goal against Colby in the 82nd minute and a goal that gave Tufts a 1-0 lead over Bowdoin in an eventual win. He was an All-NESCAC Second Team selection.

Tufts advanced to the semi-finals of the NESCAC Tournament with a stirring penalty-kicks win over Wesleyan in the first round. They were knocked out by Middlebury. Their four losses were the fewest by a Tufts team since 1996. Ralph Ferrigno was named NESCAC Coach of the Year after the Jumbos finished 6-3 in the league for third place.
