MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY EARNS NINTH TEAM BERTH TO NCAA
CHAMPIONSHIP
MEDFORD -- The Tufts University men's cross country
team has earned an at-large berth to compete at the 2007 NCAA
Division III Cross Country Championship next Saturday. Thirty-two
teams were selected to participate overall. The top two,
seven-person teams automatically qualified from each of eight
regions in the country. Sixteen additional teams were selected
at-large, including Coach Ethan Barron's Jumbos.
St. Olaf College will host the 2007 NCAA
Championship at the St. Olaf Cross Country Trails in Northfield,
Minnesota. The race will begin at noon Central time.
Tufts secured its at-large berth with a third-place
finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship Race on Saturday
at Connecticut College. This will be the Jumbos' ninth NCAA berth
overall. The team raced to a program-best fifth-place finish at
Nationals in 2005. They failed to qualify as a team last season, but
are back on track this fall.
Senior tri-captain Chris Kantos (Apple Valley,
MN) is the lone Jumbo on the 2007 roster with NCAA race
experience. He scored fourth for the team and 53rd overall in 2005
and was sixth for the Jumbos (136th overall) as a freshman in 2004.
Joining him in Minnesota will be sophomore Jesse Faller
(Burlington, MA), senior tri-captain David Sorensen (Dover,
MA), sophomore Nick Welch (Seattle, WA), freshman Greg
Pallotta (Syracuse, NY), freshman Jerzy Eisenberg Guyot
(Brookline, MA) and junior David Tilton (Newmarket, NH).
