Asian American Peer Leader Program 2011-2012

The Peer Leaders | Orientation 2011 Events

The Asian American Center is a resource for the university and the Asian/Asian American communities and fosters a supportive environment for the academic and personal development of students through its programs and services. The Center recognizes the mono- and multi-racial East Asian, Southeast Asian, and South Asian peoples, cultures and identities present in the Tufts community, and advocates for students to ensure a successful college experience.

Linell Yugawa, Director
This page contains information about the Center, our Peer Leader Program, the Asian/Asian American student organizations, and the Asian American House. We recognize that the Asian diaspora, both in the U.S. and other parts of the world, reflects a wide range of experiences and backgrounds and that participating in programs that have an Asian and/or Asian-American focus may be a new experience for some of you. We hope you will take advantage of what we have to offer, as we have much to learn and share amoung ourselves and with the larger Tufts community. Our work contributes positively to the campus and enriches the experiences of all students.

The Center coordinates educational programs that focus on Asian experience in America; offers a resource area (study space with computers and wireless internet); provides educational and social opportunities to explore topics related to Asian America; and informs students of campus events through a weekly e-mail. The Director is available for academic and personal advising and collaborates with other offices, faculty, and alumni to form an active network that ensures student interests and needs are addressed.

We invite you to explore all that Tufts offers and we hope to see you at our programs. Have a great year!

What is a Peer Leader?

Asian American Peer Leaders are sophomores and juniors selected to work with assigned first-years. Our Peer Leader Program is a resource provided in addition to the University 's Orientation Leaders. Your Peer Leader will be writing to you over the summer, be on campus during Orientation, and be available to you throughout the school year.

Why a Peer Leader?

Many first-years enjoy meeting upper-class students and view Peer Leader as valuable resources. Peer Leaders are eager to share their own experiences with you and to help you make a successful transition to college. Peer Leaders are able to address general college concerns as well as those related to growing up as an Asian in America. Feel free to seek out your Peer Leader if you have questions on academics, co-curricular activities, residence life, the Asian American community, or the community-at-large. Your Peer Leader can also help you navigate and understand the importance of being part of an Asian American Community. Throughout the year, your Peer Leader will keep you informed of events that may be of particular interest to you. Some new students enjoy the group social activities, while others feel more comfortable just spending individual time with their Peer Leader. There are no participation requirements. You decide how and when you would like to get involved.

“My Peer Leader was a great mentor who eased my transition into college by giving me advice and encouraging me to get involved in the Asian American community. All of the Peer Leaders were very welcoming and dedicated to making my first year a success. ” - Joseph Ha ‘12
