A Tomasso Lecture by Palmira
Brummett, Visiting Professor of History, Brown University. Professor Brummett is
a historian of the Ottoman Empire and the Mediterranean world whose work focuses
on the rhetoric's and genres of cross-cultural encounter.
Current projects include completing a monograph on early modern mapping
of the Ottoman Empire in text and image, and launching
another on the flow of culture, information and people in the early
modern Ottoman Adriatic.

A Barkan Lecture by Ondine Chavoya, Associate Professor of Art History
and Latina/o Studies, Williams College.
Professor Chavoya will discuss his curatorial contribution to the
exhibition "Asco: Elite of the Obscure," the first retrospective to present the
work of the Chicano performance and conceptual art group Asco (1972-1987).
Comprised of a tight-knit group of artists from East Los Angeles (Harry
Gamboa Jr., Gronk, Willie Herrón
and Patssi Valdez). Taking their
name from the forceful Spanish word for disgust, Asco used performance, public
art and multimedia to respond to social and political turbulence in Los Angeles
and beyond.
