The Archaeology Program urges students of all majors and academic interests to consider the rewards of Archaeological Field Work. Opportunities to participate in field work abound, even for people with no previous experience. Through such work, students learn the techniques and processes whereby archaeologists discover, examine and record the physical history of the past.
Field schools for students interested in archaeology may be found in nearly every part of the world. The Archaeological Institute of America provides detailed listings of most such programs in its annual Archaeological Field Opportunities Bulletin. This publication is a carefully vetted listing service for academic programs in archeology, most of which are sponsored and coordinated by Universities and Colleges worldwide. This invaluable resource is now available on-line through the web site of the Archaeological Institute of America at: http://www.archaeological.org/
The Department of Classics also maintains close professional ties with field program run through other institutes. These programs include:
The Athienou Archaeological Project based in Athienou, Cyprus and sponsored by Davidson College. http://www.davidson.edu/academic/classics/AAP/
The Mugello Valley Archaeological Project in Borgo San Lorenzo, Italy and sponsored by Southern Methodist University. http://www.smu.edu/poggio/
