GHANA GOLD: A Corporate Social Responsibility Study Tour

As of Spring, 2010, the GHANA GOLD Program has been suspended.

“Ghana Gold IV: A Corporate Social Responsibility Study” Tour is a film made by Tufts University students examining a series of interrelated issues surrounding gold mining. The students, under the direction of Prof. Pearl Robinson, spent two weeks in Ghana in January 2010 conducting interviews, site visits and discussions depicted in the film. In recent years, harmful effects of the gold mining industry have
caught the attention of environmentalists, scholars, journalists and
anti-globalization activists. This study tour uses Corporate Social
Responsibility as a framework for introducing students to Africa by
examining a series of interrelated issues surrounding gold in a
holistic fashion. Site visits and discussions with local experts focus
attention on globalization and Africa’s situation in the world economy.

GHANA GOLD participants will be challenged to think about strategies,
resources and related skills that may improve the lives of people
living in mining communities. Lessons learned are applicable elsewhere
in Africa as well as other regions of the world. Post-tour activities
include a required spring semester colloquium and plans for civic
engagement research.

First year students and sophomores in both the School of Arts and
Sciences and the School of Engineering at Tufts are the target audience
for this study tour. Other Tufts students are invited to apply. Several
seats are available for non-students.

Tufts students in the School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering are the target audience for this study tour. First year students and sophomores are especially encouraged to apply. The fee for the program is $4,000 and includes round-trip airfare, in-country board & lodging for two weeks, local travel, entrance fees to museums, an arts-based debriefing session, and a formal closing dinner. Students are responsible for their own passport, visa and travel immunization costs. Several seats are open for non-students at a fee of $5,000. A modest amount of need-based financial aid is available for undergraduate students.
