Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What kinds of courses count for transfer credit?
A: When we review courses for transfer, we look at their anthropological
content, as reflected by: whether they are offered by a department of anthropology;
whether the course materials are primarily anthropological in analysis,
methodology, or content;
whether course readings draw predominantly on the work of anthropologists;
whether the instructor has advanced training in anthropology.
If most or all of these criteria are met, we normally approve the course.
If your course does not meet these criteria, it may be eligible for Tufts
credit via another department or program. For example, if your course has
a specific
national or geographic focus, it may be credited by various language and
culture programs, etc.
Q: Does the course need to match a course given at Tufts?
A: Not necessarily. We can transfer a course as an anthropology elective whether or not we offer a corresponding Tufts course. But if there is a corresponding Tufts course, your transfer course may fulfill requirements met by the Tufts course. Check with your advisor.
Q: Can I get credit for an Independent study or internship?
A: We handle independent studies and internships outside Tufts in the same as we do when they are at Tufts: you must have a faculty supervisor similar in standing and qualifications to a Tufts faculty member. For internships you must have a site supervisor who communicates with your faculty supervisor. And your study must have reading and writing components. We need to see your ISP before we can transfer it. We look for whether or not it was conducted through ethnographic research, and whether it is informed by any anthropological concepts. Please bring your ISP to the Anthropology Transfer Credit Representative during their office hours.
Q: How many credits will I receive?
A: Dowling Hall will calculate the number of credits, using a formula based on the number of contact hours.
Q: What information do I need to present?
A: An on-line link to your course's catalogue description. If at all possible, an on-line link to syllabi or reading lists is very useful. Do not send these to the transfer credit advisor directly: use the Student Services link below.
Q: When should I arrange for transfer credit?
A: Preferably before you go. We can respond to your e-mail or fax after you have gone, but you run the risk that the course you select may not be awarded credit. The best thing to do is to make sure, in writing, before you leave. Note that the Tufts Bulletin stipulates that credit will not be awarded retroactively for internships.
Q: How long will my transfer of credit take?
A: Up to two weeks during the semester.
NB: Please make sure that your link goes directly to the course description itself. If the link goes instead to the general website of the Department or of the University/College at which you studied, your credit transfer may be delayed.
