Urban
Borderlands, Fall 2003
|
|
Urban Borderlands is a fieldwork based class at Tufts University
in which students strive to investigate and promote the positive
contributions and cultural capital of the Latino community. This
semester, each student or pair of students has in some way captured
the vibrancy and importance of the Latinos in Somerville. Together,
we have created a diverse collection of research and experiences
through which the contributions of the community can be acknowledged
and preserved. |

The
Project: Language barriers are a crucial part of understanding immigrant
communities such as the Latinos of Somerville. With the help of AHORA
students Yesenia Portillo and Sidia Escobar, I investigated the
process immigrants go through to learn English, and more importantly,
how English acquisition changes social, economic and familial aspects
of their lives. While immigrants are often faced with discrimination
and injustice due to their lack of English proficiency, our research
has shown that there is an immeasurable amount of determination
and motivation demonstrated by the Latinos of Somerville in their
quest to learn the English language. This determination is only
a small hint of a much greater desire to be an active part of the
greater Somerville community. It is crucial that this attitude and
active seeking of English education opportunities be fully acknowledged
and appreciated by the surrounding communities. Thus we can promote
a genuine respect for the strength and contributions of the Latino
community of Somerville. |
