Welcome to The AFRICANA CENTER at TUFTS

Gerald R. Gill
November 18, 1948 - July 26, 2007

A member of the Tufts community for over a quarter of a century, Professor Gill taught and mentored thousands of students and was a friend to all. He was a thoughtful and dedicated colleague, active in service to the university and the community. He loved Tufts and Tufts loved him. He will be remembered by all those who were fortunate enough to have been in his presence . . . if only for a season.

Founded in 1969, The Africana Center works to augment the academic mission of the university and to ensure that students have access to a variety of academic, cultural and student resources available on campus. The staff of the center works closely with academic departments, The Advising Deans, Student Services personnel, The Office of Admissions, Career Services and Black Alumnae. The Center serves students living in America at this time (specifically in the Tufts University environment) and works with all students of African descent from different backgrounds, ethnic affiliations, genders, sexual identities and religious affiliations, etc.

Additionally the Center works to implement programs designated to encourage and support the intellectual and individual growth and awareness of all Tufts Undergraduates. The Center sponsors lectures, workshops, concerts and films, as well as a range of additional activities and programming that reflect and celebrate the intellectual and cultural tradition of Black people in the diaspora.

The Africana Center is Located at 8 Professors Row on the 1st Floor.

The second and third floors of the building serve as a living and learning space (Capen House) for fourteen undergraduates who reside in the house during the academic year. These students are selected each year to live in the dorm and work as a community to compete individual and group projects which celebrate the rich cultural heritage of people of African descent.

The Africana Center provides the Tufts community with a number of resources that encourage students to have a successful Tufts experience. The Director and members of the staff provide valuable information, advice and services to Black Students as well as to the entire Tufts community. The Center recognizes the realities of the needs and concerns of the students of color on predominately white campuses and works to ensure that students have access to all necessary resources.

The Director advises the administrative and academic offices of the university on such issues and advocates proactively students.
