Student Organizations:

Many student organizations at Tufts are concerned about issues of men, women and gender. These groups take on all different shapes and sizes and vary in their missions, constituencies and goals. Some are discussion oriented others may be activist or event based. All groups can send a representative to Women's Center Board, an umbrella organization that exists to build coalition between organizations and develop leadership for social change. The list below describes each group and who you should contact to learn more about how you can become involved.

  • Africana Voices Against Violence (AVAV) is working to bring awareness on issues of violence in the Africana community and other communities at Tufts.
  • Alpha Omicron Pi is a group of women who are devoted to getting the best out of life through dedication to academics, philanthropy, leadership, sisterhood, and fun! Throughout the academic year sisters plan and attend events that are focused on raising money for our national philanthropy as well as social events with other students on campus.
  • Alpha Phi The members of Alpha Phi are active both within and beyond the Tufts community. Our close bond contribute to our success in annual events such as Tufts largest literacy event, Read by the River and Kids' Day. We cultivate intellectual development and the spirit of love and charity.
  • Athletics Women's sports teams at Tufts include basketball, crew, cross country, fencing, field hockey, lacrosse, sailing and more. In addition, there are several women's intramural teams and club sports.
  • Black Women's Collective (BWC) The Black Women's Collective was established by the Africana Center as a weekly forum for students to discuss and share information about issues that affect the lives of black women.
  • Broad2Be is a co-mentoring initiative between women professionals, current MBA students and undergraduate women from the nations leading institutions.
  • Chi Omega Home to 61 women who hold leadership roles throughout Tufts, the women of this chapter are not only active citizens but value friendship and sisterhood above all else. Through the semester we have many formals, mixers, and other inter-Greek events.
  • Essence Essence is an all-female vocal ensemble dedicated to singing music of the African Diaspora. Essence's music attempts to reflect the beauty and creativity of people of African descent. Formed in 1994, Essence has been sharing the joy of music with all its audiences and uplifting through song since.
  • First Year Women's Group Join us weekly for caffeine, informal conversation and breakfast. We'll chat about gripes, dreams, relationships, classes, roommates, families, bodies, futures, sexuality, activism, and whatever else is on your minds!   • GIRLS (Girl Interaction Raising Levels of Self-Esteem) GIRLS, a Leonard Carmichael Society Group, is a program that encourages connections between girls and Tufts women through sports, academics, and social activities.
  • Jackson Jills Founded in 1963, the Jackson Jills are Tufts' oldest all-female a cappella group. As a group of strong women, we share a common passion for music. The Jills are widely recognized as a powerful and gusty group, with their vocal styles ranging from divas like En Vogue to high energy Bon Jovi. We strive to live up to our motto of "cutting edge a cappella."
  • Jewish Women's Collective (JWC) Are you interested in learning about Jewish women's contributions, discussing topics such as women in the rabbinate, or experiencing creative Jewish rituals? Join the Jewish women's collective for discussions of Jewish women's issues, special speakers, or our monthly celebration of the new moon.
  • Mujeres Meet to socialize and support each other in our commonalties and differences as Latinas. Chat, advise, laugh, eat and come together as a community. Meetings are Tuesdays at 10 PM at the Women's Center. Contact: elaine.theodore@tufts.edu
  • Queer Women's Group Interested in joining a weekly conversation group with other women? The group will determine the discussion each week, but topics that we have discussed so far include being queer at Tufts, coming out, relationships with our parents, bisexuality and dating. Last year the meetings averaged about 15-20 people, with new people showing up weekly! We hope to have more social events for the women's community in the future. We meet weekly on Fridays, from 2:00 - 3:30 PM at the LGBT Center.
  • Society of Women Engineers SWE stimulates women to achieve full potential in careers as engineers and leaders, expands the image of the engineering profession as a positive force in improving the quality of life and demonstrates the value of diversity. SWE has weekly board meetings and organizes events throughout the year.
  • Tufts Alliance for the Advancement of Mothers (TAAM) Tufts Alliance for the Advancement of Mothers is working to make Tufts a family friendly campus. Whether you are the son or daughter, brother or sister, or friend of a single mother or young mother and can identify with the challenge mothers in education face, or you just want to help, we need you.   • Tufts Feminist Alliance (TFA) The Tufts Feminist Alliance is a political activist group which addresses issues pertinent to women from a feminist perspective. Through various events, we aim to educate, challenge and change the world around us. Diverse in specific beliefs, our members share the desire to provide equality for women. Weekly meetings are on Tuesdays at 9:30 PM at the Women's Center. Contact: womenscenter@tufts.edu
  • Tufts VOX (Voices for Choice) Voices for Choice is a Planned Parenthood-affiliated new student group promoting activism and awareness on preserving our reproductive rights and access to healthcare. We will be working on several on-campus awareness campaigns while also supporting legislation on the state and national level that promotes pro-choice interests.
  • Women's Board is comprised of leadership from various culture, discussion and activism groups that are interested in women related topics. We work together to collaborate, plan events build leadership skills and create networks of support. The Women's Board meets every other Wednesday at noon at the Women's Center.   • Women in Computer Science A pre-professional organization to support women entering the field of computer science.
  • Black Men's Group (BMG) This is a weekly group for men from the Africana community to discuss issues of importance to their community, share insights and knowledge as well as enhance relationships with their peers and develop leadership skills.
  • Latino Men's Group (LMG) Men from the Tufts Latino community meet weekly to discuss issues relevant to Latino men, develop interpersonal relationships and enhance leadership skills to enrich their quality of life at Tufts. Contact: alonso.nichols@tufts.edu
  • Tufts Men's Activist Coalition (TMAC) TMAC is a group of Tufts men that seek to create positive male gender roles on campus and oppose sexism and violence against women. The group meets weekly and conducts campus-wide events and programs to engage the Tufts community in the discussion and examination of gender roles, masculinity and issues of violence against women.
